Dutch Universities advise patrons to use alternative ways to access journal articles, i.e. when deals (on open access) with publishers fail!

Read the news item here: http://openaccess.nl/en/events/alternative-ways-to-access-journal-articles

In my opinion, libraries should actively promote the following browser extentions to their patrons to make it easier for them to get to the fulltext of scientific publications:

- the Kopernio button (makes one-click access to subscription-based ánd open access publications much easier) http://kopernio.com Now acquired by Clarivate Analytics!

- the Unpaywall button (fast access to open access publications) http://unpaywall.org

- Google Scholar button (still finds the most "alternative versions" out there)

In addition to these tools there is also a new tool for libraries to get more grip on user's browsing activities (on ánd off-campus) ánd actively deliver usefull pop-ups connecting users with library subscriptions and services. LeanLibrary continues where current linkresolvers fail! http://www.leanlibrary.com

The best?

The "best" depends what you are looking for.....
In my experience, to have the most chance to get to the fulltext version of a scientific publication, you have to use a number of of these tools. They work supplementary. More study/testing is necessary to complete comparison. I have organised a workshop for librarians simular to the journal apps comparing workshop ;-)

No, i think Kopernio is the most interesting for libraries (with linkresolvers & off-campus access) and their patrons, because of the way it offers one-click access to articles the libraries has subscriptions to.

For smaller libraries or people not connected to libraries Google Scholar is the best (in combination with Unpaywall)

To promote Open Access Unpaywall should be probably no.1 or 2 (btw Kopernio uses also the Unpaywall api, but also other sources/methods)

Kopernio, Unpaywall and Google Scholar are free tools.
LeanLibrary requires a license (and has quite some configuration possibilities), but gives library a way to connect to users who refuse to use library portals and sources as starting point (the vast majority if you ask me!)

So, what is the extra of Kopernio if there's already sfx and off-campus access?
Linkresolvers fail, management of Knowledge Bases or holdings databases is never 100% up to date. Kopernio gives you the pdf if it gets access, even if your Knowledge Base says you should not.
Once installed in browser, registred for Kopernio, choose the right library. It then pro-actively shows you the available pdf, accessibly in one-click.
So, no sfx menu with confusing multiple holdings, no failing linkresolver with very recent materials etc, and after once logging into the off-campus access, never logging in again, due to saved credentials.
It is a "must try" experience!
I have -for my workshop "How to get the PDF" made an overview of all tools, including some question& answer section from all responsible persons of the tools.

Last thing for today: if you install Kopernio, and go the Google Scholar, activate your Library links, you can easily compare 3 tools (Scholar itself, your Linkresolver 'and Kopernio (because it offers the pdf-link already in the search result-page of Scholar (and PubMed!). So, patrons will see available pfd's already in results page, no need to click to detail page.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif; font-size: large;">Kopernio (previously Canary Haz ( http://kopernio.com)
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Note this is a .com extension. This new company has been founded just 8 months ago. The Kopernio extension was released just in March 2017. Currently the Kopernio button is in alpha-testing and so far it seems free. The previous name appeared to be a tribute to the #ICANHAZPDF movement (requesting pdf's via Twitter with this hashtag).
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Kopernio extends the reach (and functionality) of your library linkresolver to the browser.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">It goes beyond the reach of the traditional library linkresolvers which show you if you are entitled to get the full-text based on checking your subscriptions database. It tries to solve the problem of the linkresolvers, early-online issues, publishers holdings- and access registrations. There are always discrepancies, bills not paid, backlog of mutations, titles changes etc etc.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Kopernio does not only shows users the publications they can immediately open as pdf based on library subscriptions, but also other free versions that are out there on the Web. If your library holdings say NO, but the publisher left it open, you get the pdf. There is no doubt. Either you get it or not.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Registration
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">You HAVE to create an account. If you register with your institutional /corporate email, it <span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">is then connected to the proxy settings of that particular library.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">When opening the webpage of a journal article or institutional respositories, e-print-servers etc) a #kopernio bar indicates (just like the Unpaywall tab) immediately IF a pdf has been found.

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">Off-campus
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">The first time using Kopernio off-campus, your proxy login details are stored encrypted IN the plugin, and are never shared with Kopernio servers or others.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">If your library proxy settings have not yet been added to the Haz-bar give them a shout on Twitter , on Linkedin or Facebook. Their response so far has been excellent.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">They even have added the Groningen institutional repository as the world's first repository activated for Kopernio, on my request! So, every page on that repository, containing a DOI, WILL be "hazzed". I am coining the verb "hazzing" for showing available versions of scientific publications or data (free, open access or licensed) in a browser! ;-) It's is therefore not only using institutional repositories as a source to harvest pdf's, but also as a target to show the Kopernio Get PDF button/bar.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">

<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">In Search results vs article detailed view (PubMed and Google Scholar)
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">The Kopernio button appears also in PubMed search results to offer direct access to the pdf, instead on the article view level. This is also activated for Google Scholar search result page, which makes it possible to do pratical comparison between the coverage of Google Scholar itself, Kopernio ánd the Library linkresolver showing up as Library Links in Scholar.
<span style="font-family: "times" , "times new roman" , serif;">

I have added the browser extension Canary Haz (http://canaryhaz.com) as a very promising easy tool with many interesting features. Please read more on Canary Haz in my post about browser extensions like UnPaywall, Open Access Button and Google Scholar button.
Updated version! I have added ResearchGate as identified source many researchers use to upload ánd download pdf's (both copyright protected & open access/free versions)

The Unpaywall.org button says it is searching also in "less trusted sources". ResearchGate, Academia.edu, researcher homepages, and some IRs. You can UNcheck this option in the Unpaywall tool, but they tell us it decreases coverage by about 20%.

Maybe they can adjust the text a little bit regarding the "less trusted sources".. Im am sure many institutional repositories would argue that they ARE a TRUSTED institutional repository!

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">In my opinion open access is about making research and publications as easy findable and accessible as possible, and not about boosting the read/download stats for publications on publisher sites..

<span style="font-family: "arial" , "helvetica" , sans-serif;">What is your opinion? What is your library or institutions policy in making the final publishers versions available as pdf in your repository?

Here are the comments and responses of Peter Suber (in Italic):

Does making #openaccess publications available as pdf in institutional repositories have a negative effect on stats of publishers version?

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Yes. Whenever there are OA copies at one site, they will tend to reduce the downloads of the same works at other sites.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">BTW, while there's pretty good evidence that OA copies in an institutional repository reduce publisher downloads, there's no evidence that they increase publisher cancellations. And on the other side, there's good evidence that they increase citations to the same works.

Some researchers are asking librarians to make full-text pdfs of open access in our repository (Pure) invisible on the research portal, because it would affect the read/download stats on the publishers site in a negative way. They are talking about the gold oa articles.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">To me, what's remarkable about this is that authors are identifying with the publisher's interests rather than their own interests. Their interest lies in OA, not in protecting the publisher's stats.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Another dimension of this: If the institutional repository is acting with care, then it's only providing OA when it has legal permission to provide OA. The majority of subscription journals provide this permission through their publishing contracts, and the majority of OA journals provide this permission through their open licenses. Hence, the publishers are *consenting* to this OA. There's no reason for faculty to protect publishers when publishers have the means to protect themselves.

In my opinion open access is about making research and publications as easy findable and accessible as possible, and not about boosting the read/download stats for publications on publisher sites..

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Exactly. I completely agree.

Libraries are adding these pdfs partly to build a local archive, just in case anything might happen to the publishers site ( bankruptcy, take-overs etc...)

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">I agree that repositories also provide the valuable service of preservation. But if anything, providing open access is even more important.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

It almost seems as if researchers think that these publications read/download counts, including other altmetric stats, IS going to effect there bibliographic citations.

One fear that is mentioned out loud is, that it would be bad if the repository version (post-print or final versions) would be quoted in a citation. It would cost them "official" citations.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif; font-size: x-small;"><span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">This is another good reason to de-emphasize metrics based on official citation counts!

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Altmetrics would not raise this problem, and evaluating scholars by their quality rather than their citation counts would not raise this problem.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Yes, making the pdf of a Open Access article available in an institutional repository, dóes affect the download/read stats on the Publisher's site, bút there is evidence that it increases citations.The permission to make open access available in institutional respositories is legal ánd consented by by Publishers.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">The *traffic* is divided between the various locations where open access articles should be offered (personal author site/blog, institutional repository, online Journal....)

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">No, there is no need to make final publishers versions of open access publications invisible on institutional respositories.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">There is a strange fear that other researchers could quote the version available on the institutional respository, but as the actual OA pdf's are downloaded from the Publisher's site, they are always the same for the final publishers versions.

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">(People might mistake the *green* open access publications in the institutional respository for a citable publication, but when done with care these final author versions are marked and branded very clearly as NOT the final Publishers versions. Many libraries add a special page to the final author version pdf to make this very obvious.)
<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">

<span style="font-family: "trebuchet ms" , sans-serif;">Yes, also from the preservation aspect, it is a good idea to make the final publishers versions of publications available in the institutional respository.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; text-align: left;">

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; text-align: left;"> (Tip: replace your current Favorites link to PubMed with this one: http://irs.ub.rug.nl/debid/4ccc25cca4576<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; text-align: left;"> )
<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; text-align: left;"> It is though unfortunately, not a 100% guarantee<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif; text-align: left;"> that you you will get access to the PDF:

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The best advice we can give you currently is to use the DOI-link (Digital Object Identifyer) presented in each PubMed-record (see the image below) It is shown next to the PUBMED-ID near the bottom of the record. It will take you directly to the publishers/journal-site<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">
If you can download the PDF there, it is because the library has a subscription (or it's free or Open Access).
If you can not download the PDF from there, we do not have a current subscription for access to the full-text.

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Allthough we do have a very large e-journal collection, we do not have everything in subscription!
The Get it!-button shows if we do or don't have access to the full-text. If we do, you are presented with a link directly to it, but ....<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">CURRENTLY THERE IS AN ISSUE WITH THE GET IT!-button in PUBMED. It presents -in some cases- incorrectly the message that we do not have access. we are working very hard to repair/improve this. Please contact us, if you notice something is wrong (cmb@umcg.nl)

<span style="font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">Please note that also in the case pre-prints and "early online" versions of articles the Get it!-button might give this incorrect message, due to the fact that it is simply too new, and even the publishers have not integrated the complete metadata themselves. Please try the DOI-link or the Publishers-link in these cases too!

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">The Get it!-button does not always show the correct access information on online full-text access, while the publishers icon in PubMed DOES take the users to the PDF. Klik in dat geval ook op de DOI Link van het Pubmed-record óf op de link van de uitgever/tijdschrift.

<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixgBGeUIIr8dShrs1_cWsHQlfs805i8oyJoTEfs96alyZY2DcvJVoy6GBTDCaypRHoDtnWHu7YypUNC8XVN_b0ZEVMGfA7UaqtE_D3FdfeSKMhvCxCTelAbr7GcJszRHMivpQj/s1600/DoiPubmed.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="font-family: "Times New Roman"; margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;">

<span style="color: #333333; font-family: "verdana" , sans-serif;">

Dit is niet uit te leggen. Het zorgt voor veel onvrede, en mensen die afhaken bij het gebruik van die tools of de bibliotheek...

I need to dive deeper in theory & sociological approach of research evaluation

I plan to read up on the papers mentioned & showed in Paul's talk.

Altmetric.com uses impressive techniques (i.e. text-mining) to find references to scientific publications. Those slides are a MUST-SEE! Ben McLeish did a great job explaining what they do & how far they have come already.

Where Altmetric.com shows all the attention outside the organisation connected to scientific publications, PlumX has a more focus on showing how people inside the organisation doing, including comparing them.

Kudos expects individual researchers to boost their own research in laymens term, giving them tools to promote, and measure the effect afterwards

It is annoying and confusing that all parties have many simular sources for altmetrics data, but also unique resources not shared with others. In my opinion they NEED to collabarate even more in the future to complement into better altmetrics data for all.

Mendeley data seems to be pretty close to citation analysis in showing what are going to be higly cited publications!

As to our Altmetric.com project in the UMCG: time to more forward.
We now have a very neat dashboard which monitors all mentions of our researchers on the web & social media. The library will start the discussion about how to use it, and how to evaluate research output in the future.
If people want to know more about our project, please contact me!

Question 1 SEARCH

I recently got a question about the results of the UMCG in the survey 101 Innovations in scholarly communications. Truth is, I have not looked into it yet. It only involved 273 participants.
In my opinions too little to draw general conclusions, but if we could zoom out to a Dutch level .....

There are 645 responses who stated they are currently in the Netherlands (or their last affiliation was) Here is a drill-down:

Data from dashboard101innovations-eahil.silk.co

645 is is not an impressive amount. If we add discipline Life Sciences, we get to 765.
On the European level we reach the total amount of 2200 responses.
Two questions arise:

Can we draw any conclusions on the Dutch result based on just 765 responses? And

Do the Dutch results differ from the overall European outcome?

The survey has 17 questions. Let's look at them one by one with the above questions in mind.

What tools/sites do you use to search literature / data / etc.?

Unfortunately the SILK for the original is having performance issues currently. Let's hope Jeroen or Bianca or Silk can solve that soon.
I am picking up where I left with Blogspot after a long sidestep to Rebelmouse.
Rebelmouse is a very powerful tool aggregation & curation of information, for blogging, a website even, but I miss the possibility to simply EMBED some widget, some html-code to tweak a post of info in a post........
In particular was i looking for a place to show results from the big survey 101 innovations in scholarly communication on certain topics in general, but with focus on a special SILK Dashboard on European researchers population that responded within the discipline MEDICINE.

Bookmarklets can be very useful. To install these in "normal" browsers is rather simple. They appear as a Bookmark in your Bookmark bar and can be activated by single click when needed.
Here is the page about installing the RUG proxy bookmarklet in your desktop/laptop browser.
This proxy bookmarklet will check from any webpage if you have access to the fulltext of the journal, article or other digital library licenced resource!

On the iPad it is a bit more complicated, but not difficult.
(If you do not see you Bookmark Bar on your iPad, go to Settings, Safari; Turn ON "Always Show Bookmarks Bar")
Here the description on how to install the RUG proxy bookmarklet in the iPad browser.

Step 0: Open this post on your ipad ....
Step 1: Use "Add Bookmark" (it does not matter from what page) to create a bookmark and ..
Step 2: Call it : Library Proxy, and click"SAVE"
Step 3: Open Bookmarks & History (click the open book ...)
Step 4: Go to the Bookmarks Bar, and click "EDIT" (upper-right corner)
Step 5: Click the "Library Proxy"bookmark. Edit Bookmark window will open
Step 6: Now copy one of the javascripts from below, and simply paste it inside the line BELOW the title of the bookmark. This is normally the url, but this time we will PASTE this little javascript in it.
Step 7 No need to save! Just click anywhere outside the pop-up, the window will close and the Bookmarklet is installed!

javascript:(function(){document.body.appendChild(document.createElement('script')).src='http://proxy-ub.rug.nl/public/proxy_ga.js';})();

You can now test the bookmarklet to get access to the latest UMCG publications "atUMCG"
Click on a title. The article will , most of the time, open in PubMed.
Now click the Library Proxy Bookmarklet. It will ask you to login once with your proxy account (or with your P- or S-account)
You will not see the normal RUG GetIT! icon, but you can just click the "Fulltext" link, either on the Publishers icon, or in the LinkOut, More resources.
Even if you at first not get the fulltext, you can activate the Library Proxy to go to the right page WITH the fulltext.
IF we do not have licenced access, tyou will not get it, no matter how often you click the Library Proxy Bookmarklet ;-)
IF you by chance get a page telling you the access can only by from WITHIN RUG or UMCG domain, please follow instructions, and hopefully the acccess via proxy will be arranged asap.
In one of my previous posts on Updates on (medical) journal Apps i did mention there was no news about Docphin.
And very quickly after that they came with a major update!
Here are the main new features of Docphin:

the IOS App is now ALSO for IPAD, which is a big step forward. This makes Docphin more competitive with ReadbyQxMD and docwise. The Docphin web-interface is however still unique, offering users to check and maintain their preferred journals & news on desktop computers easily.
Maybe ReadbyQxMD is goind that way too with their Read on the Web, search feature.

Medstream - Keep up with breaking research in the news

Get visually triggered by relevant topics and related articles underneath.

You could ask why on earth do you want that....
Well, simply to insert the feed into a feed reader or make all posts/updates available in an "aggregator" like Rebelmouse.com.
With Rebelmouse you can create your own social media Frontpage (and blog) based on various social media accounts, searches AND RSS feeds. (More on Rebelmouse and the power of curation )

Say I want to add Facebook posts ánd images from the page Inuit Art Zone into a Rebelmouse I made about Inuit Art. Rebelmouse offers to add My Pages via my facbook account, but other pages can only be entered via RSS.
You only need TWO things :

the base url string for the RSS feed:

http://www.facebook.com/feeds/page.php?format=rss20&id=

the Facebook ID of the page:

Find the Facebook (Page) ID

Add the ID at the end of the url string and you have a complete working RSS feed!
For Inuit Art Zone the RSS feed would be:
http://www.facebook.com/feeds/page.php?format=rss20&id=219789634717739

See the result at Inuit Art's Rebelmouse Social Media Frontpage.

Personally I am most excited about the anouncements of "docwise" making big steps to keep up with BrowZine & Read (Integration -"Open in"- with Dropbox, Evernote and more, save and email full text articles), but making a hug jump with unique features, like shareable Folders with docwise users ánd a RSS reader feature (boldly called Google Reader replacement!). Bring it on!

Here is the short version of the BrowZine score on these criteria:

Registration process:

BrowZine activated login with our proxy accounts or the University of Groningen Staff/Student accounts. No further registration is needed. Just choosing the right institution "University Medical Center Groningen / Univ Gron.
Very pleasant is the saved login details ... no logins ever needed again, unless you reset the App.

User Interface :

With it's Bookshelf design it is simple and effective. In comparison with the Medical Journal Apps, BrowZine "JUST" offers ToCs based on the library's subscriptions with not too much fancy stuff, but they managed to do an excellent job in presenting that access with just very useful functionality.

Performance:

BrowZine is stable, takes just a moment on start-up to download the library content. Just a few patrons mentioned an app freeze or crash. Response time is fine, moving between the few pages/functions of the App (My Bookshef, BrowZine Library, Saved Articles, Institution Info and Settings)

Offline: When articles have been saved, they are available for reading even when you do not have wifi or cellular access.

Access to full text:

We gave BrowZine a holdings file from our SFX-database, which they integrated in the access. "What you see is what you get" This Holdings file can be updated frequently to keep accurate with changes in our subscriptions via the special Holdings Uploading page

Only journals for which we have fulltext access, are visible in the App, including a selection of Open access Journals.

BrowZine is constantly working on getting as much Journals as possible actived for inclusion in BrowZine, but some Publishers do not release the needed metadata, and some do not assign DOIs to articles. See the current list of direct-subscribed Publisher BrowZine supports.

Acces to not-directly -subscribed Journals for instance through an aggregator like EbscoHost, are an issue for us, which we hope to solve with BrowZine.

How to get people to download your brand new Journal app for the Library?
Besides putting out Download banners on your website or blog, you can use a smart App Banner for IOS Applications that appears when users on iPad or iPhone visit your Blog or Website via the mobile Safari browser.
I first read about this at the BrowZine Marketing Tools for Libraries page
I tried it on this Blog and on atUMCG, the blog about all UMCG scientific publications.
There are plugins for this in WordPress, but all you need to do is to add a little single string of code in the Header section of the blog or website.
Here are the strings for BrowZine and docwise.

BrowZine:

docwise iPad
About Medical Libraries and mobile Apps

End of 2011 I wrote an article for a Dutch Journal called "Digitale Bibliotheek" about medical libraries and mobile apps. It is available at ResearchGate.com.
Only now i got to translating it (thank the stars for friends with translator skills!) and publishing it on Scribd
I used it partly for the EAHIL 2013 Workshop Session on Mobile technology, platforms and apps.
Nice thing about Scribd is the embed. Less fun is the advertising on Scribd, which can be pretty inappropriate...

At the end I list 5 areas libraries at least should focus on. Please give you opinion or give more suggestions!
Are these areas still relevant?

Ideally your publications as researcher within University Medical Center Groningen(UMCG) would be included into the library's Repositories and the current CRIS (Current research Information System) METIS.
The personal staff pages (MEPA) of the University of Groningen offers the option to show your publications directly from these above mentioned systems. Currently there is however no optimal way to fill these systems for the UMCG.
The University of Groningen Library is implementing a new CRIS based on PURE from ATIRA. This will eventually change the workflow of the MEPA's! Check this video (Dutch/English)

As a temporary work-around there is an option to import Publication Lists in this MEPA.

Step 1: Make sure you have an updated list of your publications in your preferred reference management tool (RefWorks, Google Scholar, EndNote Web, Mendeley, Zotero, Publish or Perish ...)

Step 2: a Publication List WITHOUT links is not optimal. To enhance the effect of people finding you in Google for instance, these lists -also the MEPA- SHOULD contain LINKS to your work. So make sure there are links IN your references.
In RefWorks you can add them in the (additional) Field URLS.
You can use the Citation Link in our Get-it! Menu (under Advanced) or generate a persistent one with this tool http://bit.ly/citationLinker

Step 3: Export the references in .ris format.

Step 4: Login into MyUniversity Step 5: Go to View Your Profile Page (in the top right corner)

Step 5: Choose: EDIT in the left menu

Step 6: Choose File Manager

Step 7: Click CHOOSE FILE and find your .ris file. Click UPLOAD FILE. If you are updating a file, first delete the old RIS file in the File Overview.

Step 8: Close, and refresh the page if the references do not appear right away.
Under ALL PUBLICATIONS you should now see the list sorted by Publication Year.
I bumped into a blog post from ChemConnectorBlog about free tools to calculate your h-index. This was posted already in 2011 and I got curious if there would be more tools available right now.
Here is a short summary of tools that can be used:
(If I missed some, please let me know via Comments please!)

The Central Medical Library advices to use Web of Science (ISI) to calculate your h-index.
Within the UMCG this is still the generally accepted citation resource & tool.
We help patrons setting up their ResearcherID and Google Scholar Citations.

ResearcherID from Thomson Reuters offers Citation Metrics, including your h-index to be calculated from your publications.

We calculate the h-index for patrons on request either via Web of Science (ISI) or via "Publish or Perish"
This free software makes it possible for librarians (or patrons) to create the h-index for themselves or for others.(Note: risk of getting banned temporarily from Google Scholar for requesting too much info from one ip address)

Google Citations (Scholar) can be used with a Google account to easily create, maintain and publish your personal h-index.
Currently 428 people have actived their Google Citations Page and published them. It is unknow how many actually use it without publishing their profile.
(Google's own Disclaimer: Dates and citation counts are estimated and are determined automatically by a computer program.)

Browser Plugin/Add-on:

Chrome: Scholar H-Index Calculator

FireFox: Scholar H-Index calculator

Apps ( not all tested to the limit..., Please add your views in Comments):

H-index Calculator (not free)(risk of getting banned temporarily from Google Scholar for requesting too much info)

Citesearcher (free)

Pub Exchange (PubEx) (not free)

VMI My Citations

EXTRA:

Not really publishing the H-Index, but MicroSoft Academic Search deserves a place next to Google Scholar for easily generating your publication list and an citation overview. Here is the visualisation of the UMCG via Microsoft Academic Search

If your Institution has Scopus, you can calculate your H-index too via Scopus.

Even if you do NOT have Scopus, you can look up an author and see his/her h-index through this url: http://www.scopus.com/search/form/authorFreeLookup.url No option to combine alternative name variations. To see the h-index: Click on the Authors Name!
