To my great surprise and fear I found out that the old mini-api widget modules of Netvibes are no longer working/visible in the new Universes . I am not completely sure how long this has been the case, but now I HAVE to speed up the conversion of those mini-api modules. It is not much work but still ..... I just updated the following Netvibes UWA widgets:\ Second Life Search Search Medworm Search BibSys Search Mesh Term Swedish-English And created a few new ones: Search MediGo ( Dutch Medical Search Engine ) E-Book Search NCRC Biblioteka (test) For all these widgets it will take a few days to become life for everybody. Yes, I like gadgets and beautiful things. "Toys & Boys", right! Here is my newest asset, a watch. For years I have not been wearing one, because I just could not find the right one (and when I did find one, they were just too expensive ). But now I found a really cool watch company called TokyoFlash that produces wonderful watches with a special concept of displaying time, with little LEDS. Of course it is a matter of taste .... During the TelecomGala of 2008 the "Golden Graham’s" were made public for this year. In the category of Best Mobile Phones the HTC TyTNII was the winner as the Best Smartphone. On 2nd the Nokia E90 Communicator and on 3rd the Sony Ericsson P1i. Of course this is a lot of commercial bullshit, but my decision to actually buy one "proves" to be a good choice. I use it to: read /send my email (work & private) via Mobile Internet via KPN check / book my calender , as well as my RememberTheMilk account for the ever growing To-Do-list make pictures and movies with both camera's publish them and other blogpost, Twitters directly to the blogs use it as mp3 and movie player Keep in touch via MSN practice my presentations "on the road" via PowerPoint Mobile prepare docs in Mobile Word mindmap via Pocket FreeMind check widgets via Zumobi search mobile sites of Google, the CMB, PubMed, Flickr, Netvibes, Twitku Mobile etc and of course as a phone...

A "new" Dutch Medical Search Engine called Medigo is really turning out to be a resource to trust, with handy functionality to help people to find quality (consumer) health information. It uses a number of filters that help cluster the search results a little. Furthermore, clicking on one of the links will show the resource on the web, and offer a top frame where users can value/vote for the resource by adding a number of stars (1 till 4) Nice extra is the search widget searchbox they offer. The info on the Netvibes pages about creating Universal Widgets via the UWA is needless complicated. Making a searchbox with or without a aditional opions from web-based available search tools is not very difficult. I will describe the steps I took, the difficulties I encountered, and how I solved them. First you need to make an xml page the way Netvibes likes it. Use the Pubmed Searchbox as template if you want a simple searchbox for one resource. Open the link in a browser, save it on your pc and open it with Notepad Don't forget to change the Title info and the meta name info about Author and Description You include the seachbox and add images and links if needed. (For a drop-down searchbox you could use the NLM QuickSearchbox as template.) Then you have to find a way to host it somewhere. (When correctly configured they can be saved as xml or html extensions. I had never heard of JupiterResearch but according to one of their reports (Oct. 2007), widgets are popular among users. And that I already DID know, but it is always nice to see confirmation like that "According to Jupiter Research awareness and use of Widgets among online users, which was less than 5% in early 2007, has now increased: 39% of online users are aware of widgets and 26% have used them" An interesting article to read is " Widgets make a big splash on the Net" in USAToday If we ever get rid of our Magic Reference Desk software (;-) another candidate is QuestionPoint. It now has Qwidget. This combines the power of QuestionPoint's reference management system with the simplicity of a chat widget. Similar in appearance to our popular MeeboMe widget , it can be placed throughout your library web page and other environments by simply embedding an HTML code.
