Libraries can register for a Google Scholar Account to connect holdings via their  OpenURL-compatible link resolver, like SFX for the  University of Groningen Library. Within University of Groningen or University Medical Center Groningen IP-RANGE you will automatically see  the link to Link Resolver Menu for this item to get to the full text fast when we have it! (Unfortunately  it does NOT show the ICON ) Google needs IP address ranges so that your library links will automatically appear for people accessing Google Scholar from these networks.  Other patrons - for instance, off campus students and staff from home - will need to configure their affiliation in their own Scholar settings manually. Today I discovered that certain IP-addresses from the University Medical Center are not included in the registered IP-range. I bumped into a blog post from ChemConnectorBlog about free tools to calculate your h-index. This was posted already in 2011 and I got curious if there would be more tools available right now. Here is a short summary of tools that can be used: (If I missed some, please let me know via Comments please!) The Central Medical Library advices to use Web of Science (ISI)  to calculate your h-index. Within the UMCG this is still the generally accepted citation resource & tool. We help patrons setting up their ResearcherID and Google Scholar Citations. ResearcherID from Thomson Reuters   offers Citation Metrics, including your h-index to be calculated from your publications. We calculate the h-index for patrons on request either via  Web of Science (ISI)  or via "Publish or Perish" This free software makes it possible for librarians (or patrons) to create the h-index for themselves or for others.(Note: risk of getting banned temporarily from Google Scholar ...

This week the International Student Congress of (bio)Medical Sciences 2012 Poster Portal has gone live with the publishing of one of the award winning posters of last year. This branded F1000 ISCOMS Portal is part of the Central Medical Library, UMCG project called "UMCG Poster Portal, an institutional Open Access portal". So far F1000 did offer poster and slides facilities just for individuals and Societies , but now they are working on this for organisations, like academic institutions as well, to start with the UMCG. ISCOMS Poster Portal You can see clearly now how a branded UMCG Conference Portal with F1000 would look like. Right now there is only just one poster there, but it is an award-winning one of ISCOMS 2011!. All presenters at ISCOMS 2012 will be asked to deposit their posters and slides to this Portal to make sure they will be visible for those who can not attend the conference. In order to increase the visibility of open access scientific and scholarly publications of the University Medical Center Groningen and thereby promoting their increased usage and impact, I am trying to create an automatically updating overview of OA publications of the UMCG, next to the beta WordPress blog that is being constructed to show all UMCG scientific publications With the masive attention the Open Access "movement" in international publising and media, I expected to this to be an easy task. But very quickly after trying to identify the resources to find these publications, it became clear that there are some serious difficulties. I won't go into details about the effects of publicing in OA or the impact factors of OA Journals , just making them visible. Many resources and overviews focus heaviliy on journal titels and sets, instead of the actual publications. In a recent email it was explained that NARCIS, National Academic Research and Collaborations Information System now offers RSS-feeds for search results, or even a widget you can embed in your website or blog I think it is interesting to keep up what is entered into NARCIS by or about the UMCG. So the search "universitair medisch centrum groningen" OR UMCG ", gave me 101 results divided in 6 tab-results Every set of results can be saved as RSS feed, embedded or added to your Favourites, EXCEPT the "ALL Sources". I tried to merge these 5 rss-feeds into one via Pipes.Yahoo.com  and it seemed to work. You can see the result on the UMCG Web Presence Scan Public Page ; Publications Tab

The Library of the University of Groningen has chosen the SelfCheck™ Systems for Checkout by 3M as default self-service provider. Just last week we installed the SelfCheck desk with a special piece of furniture (above). The systems works with the LBS4 module of OCLC/Pica. We are the 3rd library within the organization that offers their users the option to check-out their books (and more will follow). Below you see the service desks at the FWN Library (white) and the University Library itself. Currently the libraries, 3M and OCLC/Pica are working together to get rid of some unpredictable errors. After enjoying listening to Last.fm (THE social music channel/player) for a long time. I decided to try if my organisation is ready for some social software and " sharing". After seeing the great example of Stockholm University with their Stockholm University Group Radio , I made the group University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) at http://www.last.fm/group/UMCG. It's a free & open group, so if you want to join, please do ! Last.fm offers you unlimited music to listen to. Just enter the name of a band or artist you want to listen to .. et voila. You will get detailed information about the music, and will be abled to listen to an unlimited range of tracks and groups that are simular or somehow connected to your entered band or track. You can then rate the music and share it with others. That's the strenght of Last.fm.
