"Good intentions" for 2008 : New Year Resolutions

For 2008 my good intensions will focus on the subjects mentioned below.. Although many of the efforts will go into making and developing new tools for users from the library, the most important issue in 2008 will be, without a doubt, "being in contact": maintaining, improving and expanding a conversation between our users and library staff. Expanding our range of Netvibes Widgets to other platforms. Offer Library Widgets as (re)search tools in various social networks, but also creating them inside our organisations intranet. Interoperability will be main target for our widgets. I have to find out how to how to build SharePoint widgets as well... Building the Netvibes Universe into a Library Toolbox for sharing, instructions and tailor-made search and alerts options. Integrating new communication tools in existing library services. We can not ignore cell phone technology and the massive growth of use amongst our users. Short text messages, and chat, but also Mobile...

Social-networking habits of library users

The following report provides -according to the OCLC website - "insights into the values and social-networking habits of library users". With it's 280 pages it looks perfect reading stuff for Christmas. For me 2008 will be the year of the social networks. For Europe and the Netherlands it will become clearer how developments will go. Will one or two stick out? Will new ones arise? Will the interoperability with OpenSocial really take off? Will our Dutch Hyves change into a more serious network or ...? This report tells you how the situation is right now based on a survey (by Harris Interactive on behalf of OCLC) of the general public from six countries—Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States—and of library directors from the U.S. Tags: social networks , social , library , end-users , habits , user studies , OpenSocial

Library 2.0 event at Libraries of University of Groningen

Last Thursday, December 13th a special program around Library2.0 took place. Some 45 colleagues attended and participated in a work-session to know more about Web2.0 stuff. I am not sure if the link to the photo's is meant to be public. They published it on the Library Intranet site. If I get a green light, it will be up here asap. Here's the list of the speakers: Kees Westerkamp (introduction & chair) Gosse Bouma : about the Semantic Web Henk Ellermann ( a reaction on Gosse's talk and a short but clear opinion about the context & content) Alice Doek : on web 2.0 at the Library of University of Amsterdam (UvA) Guus van den Brekel : "Library2.0 is not a Tool, but a Setting" about Library2.0 and Tools for Users at the Central Medical Library of the UMCG Two YouTube movies were shown: A Librarian's 2.0 Manifesto A Vision of Students Today '23 Things' This was mentioned several time and refers to the website " 23 Dingen '. Floating Meebo Chatbox : stays available where ever you go!

This Meebo Chatbox is configured inside a Conduit Toolbar (OUR QUICKSEARCH CMB LIBRARY TOOLBAR) as a floating window. It stays available no matter where you go. You can even drag it to the side of your screen, whatever you want. It only disappears when you click the X. This way the user can -while chatting with a Librarian- follow his instructions directly and without having to switchs screens. Websites can be visited, settings adjusted, searches analysed, and you will have the chatbox visible all the time! Chatbox Libraries of the University of Groningen

The Libraries of the University of Groningen offer as trial a Chatbox on their webpage: http://www.rug.nl/bibliotheek/vragen/chatten Use of this chatbox is not limited from only this page, because a simple Cut-andPaste action can get you the Chatbox everywhere you want: even you own personal Netvibes startpage ... or add it as a floating window to your Toolbar paste it into a Nestor (Blackboard) page add debibliothecaris@rug.nl to your MSN contacts list, and see immediately when the Librarian is online The big difference with just putting static links to the library-webpages all over is that, in the case of the meebo-chatbox, the reference librarian in charge can see immediately when a user opens a page with the chatbox. And in theory the librarian COULD actually pro-active START the chat..... Vraag het de Bibliothecaris ... Ask your Librarian! &lt...

What If The Library Would Offer You Pennvibes?

Right now, I can only offer our own Netvibes Universe DIGICMB at www.netvibes.com/digicmb . You still HAVE to make your own Netvibes account by yourself and copy all relevant newsfeeds or searchboxes into your own personal start page . (Well, you could ask me to create this account for you or your department, if you really want to try. Let's hope not too many will do this. It's not my job to offer this kind of service at all .... ;-) You also still have to remind yourself that you need to login everyday in Netvibes , instead of just login once in your uni network and get there automatically. You COULD bump into all kinds of weird stuff, get stuck trying to get help or support, because not many know about rss, widgets and gadgets inside this organisation and it is NOT an officially supported service (always beta, right?). I even don't know what our IT-departments would have to say about this, but -for this- we do not need them anyway. They would probably say: better...

Google Scholar Citations in PubMed?

We have an excellent bunch of bloggers in the Netherlands. They are always uptodate and do not just scan their own subjects. I will blog later on about a 4-D anatomical CAVEman ( mentioned by ZBdigitaal). But now, I want to mention to a Greasemonkey Firefox script that presents PubMed search results with the Google Scholar citations ( posted by Wowter ). Wowter is again referring to a post by David Rothman , which explains in detail how the script can be installed and used. It is one of Davids frequently used topics, as can be seen when you search for "greasemonkey pubmed" in the Medlib Blog CSE. I think this is really wonderful, but I also seriously wonder if we should not put some kind of disclaimer next to it, because, on numerous occasions we have been warned by Peter Jacso and others about the dubious treatment of metadata by Google. Also I wonder if anybody can explain to me what "80% hit"means .... Tags: google , google scholar , gs , grease...

Did the user and the world change in Spike City (Spijkernisse)?

Did the user and the world change in Spike City (Spijkernisse)? Not if I look at the somewhat passive attitude of the specialists and gp’s gathered around for a CEC-like event in the Ruwaard van Putten Hospital , organised by the library of that hospital. Probably, it was the long working day ánd the long staff meeting they had just before the meeting, that prevented them from massively engaging themselves in active discussions. Or was it the buffet and wine;-) And no, their world has not changed that much, restricted they are by hospital rules concerning computer access and confidential data. Their workflow requires the most easy access to ejournals, ebooks and databases. That’s their primary concern, and that’s what triggered them to ask questions on occasion, while presented with new ways of searching and accessing MD Consult , OVIDSP and their local version of the Digital Library, developed by Ingressus . My presentation about what has been going on óutside their scope, on...

OpenSocial : connecting the social networks?

Google will launch somewhere this week OpenSocial , a set of tools for developers to make interoperability and connectivity between social network applications happen. The social glue or lubrication that will make it easier to integrate special widgets into a social network like Facebook or Hyves (the booming Dutch network: already 4.670.148 members since oct 1st 2004!). So many of these social networks are popping up everywhere, and it seems only logical that it will be possible to exchange information and functionalities between these sites. We have seen this patern happen a few times now, and still see it happening all around us. Open Standards, OpenUrl, OpenSource, OpenSearch etc. Virtual World are multiplying everywhere too. The concept of interoperability has popped up there too. For the Dutch Hyves - and our main users inside Hyves - this could mean a lot. Libraries will be abled in a better way to develop library services inside social networks and make good use of the unlimit...

The shift in users and everything else : a ili2007 follow-up

The presentation of Stephen Abram at the ILI2007 is still in my mind. Although I knew a lot of stuff he mentioned, it triggered me again to focus even harder on studies about the new generations that are already amongst us (as student or staff) or soon will be. What stuck to me, was the fact that research showed that even the brain patterns of this Millenials show significant differences to others. Abram also cites the research of Richard T. Sweeney about Millenials. Sweeneys powerpoint and article are really good stuff to read. The mere knowledge that these various learning styles co-exist in our classrooms and the information about their differences should trigger educators and librarians in developing new ways of offering information. What else is changing and where is it going? everything is getting smaller. your pockets in 2020 will be filled with an unimaginable amount of information available via gadgets that get smaller and smaller the focus will be on the context, rather ...

ILI2007: Summa : Integrated Search & OpenSource

The ILI2007 started with a bang ( Stephen Abram ) and ended with a flash ( Phil Bradley ), but in between, you had to really search the few little gems. They should not have programmed that many talks with just 15 minutes. However I will report about some of those talks in the next couple of days. An very intriging new search for the Stadsbiblioteket in Denmark is called SUMMA. They call it integrated search instead of federated search and plan to become Open Source in 2008. It was amazingly fast and sophisticated. Come to think of it, the story reminds me very much of our own Livetrix development at Groningen. It was a good presentation and rumours were whispering that it will be used in a few university libraries in the Netherlands. Summa is based on user studies. One such study is The hybrid library: from the user's perspective . [pdf 22 mb) pictures ILI2007 Tags: ili2007 , summa , livetrix , stadsbiblioteket , hybrid library , searching , search

Internet Librarian International & Second Life"

Somehow Second life was mentioned very often at the ILI2007 in London and it was not just during my co-presentation with Kitty Pope & Barbara Galik. Even Stephen Abram talked about it a lot, because he thinks it is definitely part of web 2.0 and partly because SirsiDynix sponsors a couple of island for the Sl Library project. He thinks it is all going to be about the CONTEXT and less about content. The Second Life presentation slides will be online soon, but for people who can not wait on http://www.slideshare.net/digicmb you can see the slides from Eahil Krakow (almost the same). Next Generation Libraries: the 2.0 Phenomenonx (ILI2007 keynote)

The opening of the ILI2007 Conference in London at the Copthorne Tara hotel was INSPIRING to say the least. Some would say I do not need to be inspired, but the presentation by stephen Abram, President-Elect, SLA and Sirsidynix (Canada) was everything that I have been reading and thinking about the directions Libraries should take up.immediatly. No waiting, further researching, trying to improve exciting systems and tools. He collected all arguments & proof about shifting environments, learning styles, growing & altered brains from the youth. The network is changing the behaviour of our users and we should jump on that train to at least BE THERE where the user is searching for his information, at the point of need. I can go home now. But I really want to thank him for mentioning Second Life, Kitty Pope & Barbara Galik several times in his speech. It will make our presentation of this afternoon easier. So far I am amazed, because SL was actually mentioned in every single o...
