Personal start-page tools in educational setting

Here is a short video that H. Songhai presented at the EduCon 2.0 Conference held at the Science Leadership Academy in Philadelphia, January 27, 2008. A very nice example of the use of personal start-page tools in educational settings! I would like to get in touch with more people that are doing this, for instance in an academic organisation. PubMed Search : UWA Widget Netvibes

Web Widgets (or gadget, badge, module, capsule, snippet, mini and flake) are small elements that can be installed, by choice, in all kind of web environments like Netvibes, iGoogle, Pageflakes, Windows Live ... and many social network tools. Often they contain compressed information to be viewed or listened at, or they offer quick search options. Basic idea is to make these widgets universal, which means: I make the basic design/content once and everybody can share it with me or take it's own copy into it's own environment by choice. It comes in various options: to be used directly from, for instance the new PubMed Search Widget for the users of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG) and the University of Groningen, in a Netvibes Universe, http://www.netvibes.com/digicmb as a link, to install it as a chuck of codes, to be embedded in blogs or other websites But, to make it completely flexible (but also risking complete chaos) many tools are available to add, s...

Usage UpToDate over 2007

UpToDate is certainly on of the top 5 resources for the University Medical Center Groningen, but we can not get user stats from our SFX- of Metalib tool because it is simply NOT "METALIB or SFX- ENABLED/COMPATIBLE". So, we must trust the company itself for the user statistics. Here is what it comes down to for the Groningen situation: Total use in 2007 : 131.185 opened topic reviews 360 times per day, 15 times per hour and every 4 minutes somebody opens a UpTodate Topic review! Add UpToDate to your personal Netvibes start page: Have a look at some more Library widgets at: www.netvibes.com/digicmb Tags: UpToDate , sfx , metalib , library , medical , umcg , user statistics , widgets , netvibes , universe

Toolbar and Universe offer back-up access to resources!

Today the website of the University of Groningen was unavailable for several hours and people were calling us to find out how they could get access to our library resources. They were not able to surf to any of our resource lists on the web. Even many saved bookmarks and favourites did not work. The maintenance to the CMS of the website caused a little panic under our users. Luckily we could refer them to two ways to get to the most important resources used: Through our Quicksearch Library Toolbar all search engines and resources were ready for use. No need to know where they come from .... Through our Netvibes Universe start page people can start searching right away ór take-away the modules/widgets to paste them in their own personal start page. Downside was that many Netvibes widgets , hosted as html pages, at the RUG-CMS, were not available either ;-( ...., and that our mobile website is using links to this CMB as well, instead of using the Ne...

Netvibes Universal Widget API : finally

I finally set myself in converting some of my Netvibes "old" miniapi's into the Netvibes Universal API (UWA). Main motivation: make them platform-independent. I have submitted two widgets, and according to Netvibes it will take 2 days before they come available for the public.... But when they do they can be added to: Mac iPhone iPod touch iGoogle Opera Windows Vista Windows Live Yahoo! Widgets And they promise that SOON they will expand this -by use of the SOCIAL APIs - to the Social Networks that matter. Netvibes is opensocial launch partner. See the LiveTrix Search Box See the MedlinePlus Search Box! Therefore I decides to add them, as showcase to my Universe, www.netvibes.com/digicmb Tags: netvibes , uwa , universal widget api , opensocial , medlineplus , livetrix , social networks , opensocial

Usage PubMed Outside Tool : SFX statistics of RUGLinks

For years now, I am putting together this list of the usage of our PubMed Outside Tool link. We see a very strong rise of the use of PUBMED wíth RUGlinks (our Outside-tool, the SFX-linker). The special URL turns on our library’s Outside Tool for every record displayed in PubMed. People click the special URL with our Outside Tool username on average: 719 times per day, 30 times per hour and every 2 minutes somebody clicks to PubMed with this URL! Yearly: 2007: 262.579 (New Year RECORD!) 2006: 221.803 2005: 189.486 2004: 73.256 2003: 24.152 Even more interesting is the rising number of times users actually CLICK on our library’s Outside Tool icon, on average: 924 times per day, 38 times per hour and every 90 seconds somebody clicks the RUGLINKS icon in PUBMED to get access to the fulltext and see info about the availability of the specific document. Total 2007: 337.436 times

Power2Go : nowhere to get?

The stuff I keep carrying around with me to work or on trips is growing in numbers, but more important is that the growing demand for "power"-and more explicit "portable power"- to be abled to use all those tools and gadgets. So, I need power to use ánd re-charge my stuff, even when I can not use a wall-plug! Ever since I read about a new Philips product (somewhere in october 2007) I have been trying to find out where I could find and BUY a so-called Power2Go rechargable Power Pack SCE7640/12. They promise over 60 hours of portable power and all kinds of connector tips, but the Philipscall-center for consumer care has not been abled to locate any useful information about howmuch it would cost and, more important, where I could get one ....
