Conduit offers Toolbar cut-up : select the Apps YOU want

Without having to install a single Conduit toolbar, you now can select the Apps (toolbar-items cut-up from excisting Toolbars or seperate Apps not belonging to any Toolbar) and construct you own "toolbar".
Starting place is the Conduit App Marketplace
Let's say for instance that I do not want the complete Webicina Toolbar, but just one or two parts.
I would search the App Marketplace for Webicina and See what parts are available as seperate Apps .
You would find 4 Apps:
NOTE: When going to apps.conduit.com you add the Apps to your browser, so you will only see the Apps that the browser with which you browse supports. Currently, the Beta version of the Chrome support of APPs only supports Gadgets. They are working on adding other APps (Menu Buttons, RSS readers and HTML Apps) for Chrome in the near future.

Just click the link of Medical Professionals and see what happens .

Confirm you want it: The app you're about to install requires Conduit Engine. Once you've installed Conduit Engine on your computer, you'll be able to instantly add apps from all over the Web with no additional installation. It will simply add one icon below your Bookmark toolbar with the functionality of that App. In case of the Webicina App you will get:-  direct link to Webicina Medical Professionals Section-  direct search in the search widget "Search PeRSSonalized" here -  direct link to all professional web 2.0 sections of Webicina-  step by step guides &-  Suggest a Site form
In the image you see the Webicina icon, plus a few relevant other Apps that can be found in the Conduit App Marketplace:-  PUBMED Search & Databases (from the Pubmed ToolbarFind Articles App by UConn Libraries All Top Search Engines in One Box
Free Ebooks Search
Wikipedia Search

The Apps can be managed via Right-Mouse Click menu.
This way Apps (or Toolbar elements) can be selected and shared, giving the user more control over his/her browser (toolbar) space.

Launch of "Medical Library Lab" at CMB UMCG website

Today I put the pages online that form the so-called "Medical Library Lab" of the Central Medical Library of the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG).

It is the first draft of a set of pages that will change frequently.
The intension is to offer an up-to-date overview of available tools, tips & trics created by the library for end-user to enhance their own desktop, browser, network or mobile.

It is not completed yet, and we hope to get more feedback from users. Please have a look and send me your comments for improvements, additional stuff or just plain simple your opinion!

Corporate Web Presence SCAN UMCG

Please have a look at another practical use for a Netvibes Public Page.
Here is the first draft of the "Corporate Web Presence Scan" for the University Medical Center Groningen (UMCG).
It was created to support the group inside the hospital that is preparing a sort of  a"Social Media Plan & Policy" for the hospital.
The Scan makes it very clear and visible what the Web Presence of the UMCG is. It can be followed day by day, and shows rss-feeds, and Saved Searches where no RSS was available or possible. Any suggestions for adding stuff?

The last Tab contains a tool that almost automatically creates a simular Web Presences Scan, called SocialMention

Virtual Research Networks : Towards Research 2.0

Here is my talk  on Virtual Research Networks, where I try to paint a picture around researchers not only disconnecting from the library, but in growning numbers even by-passing the library, using clever applications and web 2.0 technology. In general they use the general social network tools, like Facebook and Linkedin.
They also build their own networks with tools like Ning, ánd -most important- third parties (mostly commerical) develop tools intended to "capture" the researchers in their so-called "workflow" tools.

One possible way for libraries to respond, could be: work together with your key stakeholders in your organization on developing a "Virtual Research Environment" (VRE). Major player worldwide on this topic is JISC. I thank Frederique Van Till, Programme Manager, e-Research at JISC ,kindly for her time in talking to me about the VREs project.

Impressions from EMTACL10

Before I will post on the EMTACL10 conference content-wise I will point out some material you can have a look at. All official presentations and Lightnings talks will be published on the EMTACL10 webiste, including all HD recorded sessions. Due to the large amount (and size) of the material it will take a while for it to be online.
Content created by participants (and non-participants) via:

The presentation with the highest impact on the audience was wihout a doubt by Ida Aalen. It was called:

"I've Got Google, Why Do I Need You?"

A comment I picked up during lunch afterwards : "I feel completely incompetent as a librarian now ..."
While Ida is, without a doubt, a briljant student, she gets away -for now- with organizing study in her own way using Evernote, Google Docs, Wikipedia and Google (Scholar) Search and therefore practically "Bypassing The Library" . It is not a complete disconnection, because she still goes to the library for books, to borrow them. While reading them she types her summary at a speed of 600 characters per minute. She remembers everything, she claims. Not facts, but remembering reading about it, she is abled to "retrieve" the needed info ...... within 30 seconds. "Because I am not stupid, but I am impatient"
When the video recording of this talk go live, it is a must-see for librarian. Not that it is a new message, but it is brought to use so directly, vivid and clear to almost 180 librarians in the main conference room of EMTACL10.
Here is a short "tease"on Youtube:
